Can the tax office access foreign accounts?

What you need to know if you have an account abroad – and how you can protect yourself when reporting to the tax office.

Do you have an account abroad?

Then the German tax office might be interested in it – even without warning. Every year, over 100 countries automatically report data on foreign accounts of German taxpayers. This is based on the Financial Account Information Exchange Act (FKAustG) – and the deadline is September 30th.

 

But what exactly is reported ? Who is affected ? And what can you do if you discover that payments to your foreign account were tax-relevant?
